Kallarat Village

Reivews 0

Kallarati is a village of Lower Kurveles, part of the Vranisht administrative unit of the Himare municipality. It extends on both sides of the upper flow of Shushica and borders with Bolena, Vranisht, Kuç and the Bogonicë-Gjonthana mountain range.

Documentary historical data show that Kallarat has been a settlement, at least since the XI-XII century. However, we find the first documentary materials after the Ottoman conquest of these provinces at the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century. According to the Ottoman cadastral records of the year 1432, which recorded the population of the province of Kurvelesi, they indicate that the village of Kallarat was the largest settlement of this province and had 87 houses and a population of about 600 inhabitants.

Kallarati today has a limited number of inhabitants, probably less than 100. After the 90s, due to economic difficulties, a good part of them were forced to emigrate, within the country to the cities; and across Europe, mainly in Greece and Italy.

Today the houses of the mountain villages preserve the characteristics of the buildings of the area. These dwellings are built using local stone and the roofs are, in most cases, covered with stone slabs and tiles. Hospitality and generosity have been and still are well-known characteristics of the inhabitants of this village.

Being a mountainous country, the inhabitants of the area have a tradition of cooking meat and mainly, among the most favorite, they have the meat on a skewer, which means roasting a slaughtered and cleaned lamb, placed on the embers of the fire and which is then slowly rotated for gradual roasting.

The houses and people in Kallarat are incredibly welcoming.
