Trajan's Castle

Reivews 0

Trajan's castle is located in the northeast of the village of Tren, in Devoll. It rises on a high mountain ridge 1245 m above sea level. The Castle of Trajan is one of the prehistoric fortified settlements, the largest in the territory of Illyria, with an area of 22 ha.

The castle is a monument of cultural heritage, type "Archaeology", approved in January 1963. The castle is thought to have been named: by the Roman Emperor Trajan, who lived a hundred years after Christ and long after his death, people kept talking about his justice, his goodness.

The castle is divided into five parts by surrounding walls, which have a total length of 3 km. Its southwestern part has many wide natural terraces suitable for living, while the northern, northeastern part is completely rocky and falls perpendicularly on the lake of Prespa e Vogël. The walls have a thickness of 3.20-3.50 m and are built with rough stones.

However, the protection of this settlement does not end there. A 500 m long wall runs across the height of the hill, cutting through it. This wall was known as the Moku wall, which is thought to have been built in a later period and served as an ambush in case of a surprise attack for the inhabitants, who lived outside the walls of the castle.

Protected settlements with many surrounding walls are a characteristic feature of the Illyrian fortifications of an early period. Objects from the VIII-VII centuries BC, belonging to a mound, have been found in its vicinity. In the vicinity of the castle there is also the cave of Treni, the cave of Ventrok, which remain to be visited as well as Gorica e Pavliqi, where discoveries of great scientific value have been made.
