The Stelushi Castle, also known as Varoshi Castle or Skënderbeu Castle, is one of the most important historical monuments in Albania, which is located at the northeastern end of the Mat valley, near the village of Viq. The name of the castle, Stelush, comes from Turkish documents, while local residents call it Varosh, connecting the name to the rock where it was built. Due to its historical and cultural importance, the castle has been an Illyrian settlement since the early period of history, leaving behind a rich architectural and historical legacy.

This important fortress has played a critical role in the history of the region, especially in the medieval period. At this time, a medieval town was formed around the castle, which was named Stellush and became the center of the Kastriot family. This fact is also confirmed by the historian Marin Barleti, who mentions Steluš as one of the most important cities of the time, with a strategic position and exceptional natural beauty.

We still find traces of this medieval city in many special areas, such as in Viq, Mbasdeje, Gur Lure, etc. The structure of the fortifications and other settlements around the castle point to a great time of urban development in this region.

In the later period, the castle became an important residence for the Kastrioti family, which was one of the most famous and important families of that time in Albania. This place became one of the main centers of their movements and activities, making the fortress an important strategic place in the defense of their territories.

Today, Steluš Castle is a place to visit for tourists and historians, providing a space to understand the history and culture of this ancient place. An important part of its heritage is still being discovered and many secrets are yet to be discovered, making it a center of attraction for scholars and history researchers.
