Reivews 0

The Castle of Guri i Bardhë, also known as Petralba, commands a prominent position on a mountain ridge at 778 meters above sea level, below the village of Guri i Bardhë and above Fshat village. It holds significant cultural heritage in Dibra and played a crucial role in the history of the Kastriots, particularly during Gjon Kastriot's time, Skanderbeg's father.

Considered one of the most important fortifications, its exact antiquity remains unclear due to limited archaeological research. Nonetheless, it was likely erected following the fall of the Xibri fort. The town of Guri Bardhë was a key center during the Kastriot principality, believed to be the birthplace of Skanderbeg according to local tradition.

Over the centuries, Guri i Bardhë has witnessed various historical events, including the invasion of Ali Pasha Tepelena, who rebuilt the castle. At its zenith in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, it ranked second only to Shkodra in terms of population and housing, surpassing cities like Prizren, Kruja, Gjirokastra, Elbasan, and Berat.

Despite its rich and varied history, the Guri i Bardhë castle stands as a testament to Dibra's culture and heritage, offering a captivating glimpse into Albania's past.
