Vuno Village

Reivews 0

The ancient village of Vuno is located near the canyons of Ilias after passing the village of Dhërmi on the national road that leads to Himare. The settlement dates from the VIII -VI BC and is positioned about 400 m above sea level, with a stunning view of the Ionian Sea.

There are a large number of houses with characteristic architecture and cobblestone streets. Vunoi is characterized by white houses with colorful doors and ancient Orthodox churches built mainly in the 18th century. Some of the most popular recent documents in this village are the letters of Ali Pasha Tepelena. As Pasha of Ioannina he advised some important foreign visitors to visit these parts offering all his hospitality.

Lord Byron also wrote about Vunoi, Eduard Lear, a painter and writer passionate about Vunoi, who wrote and painted for a long time about this country, works which today are kept at Harvard University.

The most characteristic cult objects in Vuno are: the Church of St. Mary of Mesodhi, built in 1783, and the Church of St. Spiridhon. These stone-built churches clearly show the care that the locals gave to faith through architecture.

The stones used for construction are of average size. They are in clean lines, without arches and with underpasses in sync with the cobblestones that can be seen even today.

Special attention is constantly paid to art and culture in Vuno, festivals and concerts with different music or parties such as the South Outdoor Festival are organized there almost every summer.
