The city of Delvina

07 Aug 2023

Delvina is located 16 km northeast of Saranda, in the south of Albania. The total area is 183.01 km² and the population reaches 7,598 inhabitants. The city is built on a hillside. Delvina, once a small village, a center of Sanjak since the 16th century, welcomes its visitors with the proud statue of one of the nation's most prominent figures, the first Albanian Prime Minister, Sulejman Delvina.

The city of Delvina possesses a number of rare monuments such as: Delvina Castle, Kamenos Monastery (with a Byzantine architecture), Kostari Monastery, Kakodhiqi Monastery and Gjin Aleksi Mosque in Rusan. Also the Xermehalla complex, consisting of objects social-cultural, (mosques, mosques, shrines, hammams, inns and mills for grinding wheat).

The area has an open background view towards the Ionian Sea, the plain of Vurgu, Lake Buthrotum, the plains of Bushec and Lefka, and the springs of Oknos of the Blue Eye. The main economic resources of the area are: agriculture, livestock and viticulture. However, Delvina is also rich in the tradition that has made it popular in Albania, as the homeland of saz, folk clothing, etc. Food is no doubt another delight for tourists, with chicken pot pie, aubergine rolls and lamb entrails being among the wonderful dishes that can be enjoyed, along with a glass of local wine. Delvina remains the city where the heritage of the past is wonderfully combined with the wonder of nature. Near the sea in summer, near the snow in winter, the city is an excellent tourist destination at any time of the year.
