Konispol Cave

Reivews 0

The Konispoli cave is located near the top of Saraqin mountain, at an altitude of 400 m above sea level. It is known differently by the residents as the Kreshmoi cave. The cave environments have two wide corridors, 24 and 26 m and a ceiling height of 6 m, thatr indicate that they were suitable for habitation. In the cave, the excavations made on an area of 20 m², showed the very early history, with rich archaeological materials and with a very long time span.

The beginnings of living in the cave belong to the Upper Paleolithic, represented by atypical stone tools. It is thought that on the basis of methodical carbon research, the layer may be 26,370 years ago, it is also followed by a cultural layer with typical Mesolithic flint tools, of 7630 years B.C. The other layers belong to the Neolithic, Eneolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age, they are separated on the basis of pottery products.

From the Bronze Age to the Iron Age and the continuous habitation of the cave, they tell us about the early antiquity of the Illyrians. At the entrance of the cave, many vessels and fragments of vessels and terracottas of the III-II centuries BC were found on the surface.

The data, which also determine the character of the economy, are valuable. The finding of carbonized grain and soft animal bones in the early Neolithic layer testifies to the beginnings of agriculture and animal husbandry.
