Reivews 0

The legend of Gryka e Vajë, or the Valley of Washes, recounts a tragic event that occurred on June 16, 1478, leaving a poignant mark on the history of Kruja. Located north of the town, on the northernmost part of Kruja Mountain, Gryka e Vajë holds symbolic significance for the community.

Following the conquest of Kruja by the Ottoman army, Albanians found themselves under Ottoman rule. In an act of defiance against enslavement and to safeguard their honor, a group of 90 Cretan women and girls made a courageous decision. Holding hands, they leaped from the cliff, which towers up to 200 meters in height.

This sacrificial act has become a renowned legend, passed down through generations as a testament to courage and the fight for freedom. It has further fueled Albanian resistance and pride against invaders.

Today, Gryka e Vajë remains a sacred site and a symbol of Albanian resistance. It attracts tourists and Albanians alike, seeking to connect with the country's history and heritage.
