Church of Saint Thanas, Voskopojë

The Church of Saint Thanas in Voskopoja, erected in 1721, stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Korça. Situated in the northeastern part of Voskopoja within the Akamnel neighborhood, this architectural masterpiece exemplifies the fusion of Orthodox artistic traditions with local culture.

With its distinctive architectural features, the church holds a special allure for visitors. Designed as a tripartite basilica, it boasts two domes supported by a drum, along with a spherical dome rising above two pilasters and eight pillars. Its dimensions, spanning 19 meters in length, 10.50 meters in width, and reaching a height of 8 meters, impart a sense of grandeur and harmony.

The craftsmanship exhibited in the construction of the domes, vaults, and architectural details attests to the skill of the master builders of the time. The exterior of the apse is adorned with seven blind arches, augmented by two lateral arches, adding complexity and beauty to the structure. Natural light floods the interior through two small windows in this area.

Inside the church, the hall is equally remarkable, featuring six arcades supported by five pillars and two capitals, creating an elegant and cohesive space. Despite enduring challenges such as the theft of icons between 1990 and 2010, including those dating back to 1724, the Church of Saint Thanas remains a vital religious and cultural center in the community.

Today, it continues to serve as a venue for religious ceremonies, particularly those held at the Voskopoja cemetery. Its profound artistic and historical significance makes it an attractive destination for visitors and researchers alike, offering a glimpse into Albania's rich cultural heritage and architectural legacy.
