Shala River

The Shala River, also known as Shalë, winds its way through the Albanian Alps in the northern region of Albania, nestled within a protected area. Originating near Theth village close to the Montenegro border, it traverses southward through Shalë, Shosh, and Temal municipal units before joining the Koman Reservoir near Telum village, where it is fed and drained by the Drin River.

Spanning approximately 37 kilometers from its source atop Radohina to its convergence with the Drin, the Shala River descends through picturesque valleys, including Thethi, Ndërlysa, Musha, Breg-Lumi, Porta e Shalës (Gorge of Rrshqëm), Lotaj, and Shoshi. Its mountainous terrain yields an average drop of 22 meters per kilometer.

Renowned for its pristine, crystalline waters, the Shala River boasts an average annual flow of around 34 m³/sec, peaking in November at 52m³/sec and dipping to 9m³/sec in August. Abundant in various fish species, including the coveted trout found exclusively in freshwater, the river supports a diverse aquatic ecosystem.

The river's cool blue hues and towering cliffs create a breathtaking landscape, captivating visitors with its unparalleled beauty. Over the years, especially since the advent of democracy, the Shala River has emerged as a sought-after tourist destination, hailed by both locals and foreigners as the crown jewel of Koman and Albania's natural wonders.
