The castle rises on a hill in the village of Margelliç, near the city of Patos, and was built in the 7th century.
Margëllec Castle was an important early settlement in the past centuries and played an important role in protecting the area from the attacks of the invaders.
It was declared a "Cultural Monument" in 1971.
