Tepelena Castle

The castle of Tepelena can be found to the north of Tepelena's city. It has a rich history dating back to the 14th century and is situated at a height of 350 meters above the sea. Throughout history, this castle held great significance because of its advantageous location, as it effectively regulated access to the Drino valley from Gjirokastra and the Vjosa valley from Përmeti. 

The 18th century witnessed the reconstruction of this castle, a remarkable feat accomplished by none other than Ali Pasha of Tepelena, a prominent figure in Albania's past. The significance of the castle lies in its crucial involvement in the struggles for Albanian independence and its function as the site of pivotal conflicts during the era of Ali Pasha. At present, around 300 inhabitants reside within the fortress of Ali Pasha Tepelena, where houses have been constructed. The castle's elevated location provides a magnificent overlook of Tepelena and the encompassing rural areas.
