Kardhiq Castle

Kardhiq Castle is a cultural heritage monument in Kardhiq, Gjirokastra district. An interesting fact about Kardhiqi Castle is that it has been an important strategic center for many governments and conquerors in its history. This fortress was under the control of the Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Italians at the time of the conquest.

During the Middle Ages, Kardhiq Castle was a big place for trading. It was also used as a stop for groups of travelers and merchants going between Europe and Asia.

During World War II, the Kardhiqi fortress was an important site for fighters who opposed the German soldiers.

Inside the castle, you can see walls that are build to protect and stairs that are made from carved rocks. The flora of the Kardhiqi Castle is very rich and diversified.

The castle is located in a high area and this makes it possible to grow a variety of plants. In this area, typical fruits of forests and dry fields of Albania grow, such as olives, basil trees, mountain plants and aromatic plants. The vegetation in this area is important not only for nature, but also for the local community, as they are used in traditional Albanian cuisine to create delicious and unique dishes.

This castle is very suitable for nature expeditions and hiking also offers a panoramic view of the entire village of Kardhiqi.
