Castle of Ajtoit`s Cuka

The castle of Ajtoit`s Cuka is located on a hill near the village of Çiflik, about 330 m above sea level. The area surrounded by the walls is about 7.5 ha. The castle is about 16 km away from the south of Butrint and about 5 km from the Ionian coast.

Archaeological data such as wall construction techniques and mobile material show the continuous use of the castle from the period of Antiquity, IV-III centuries BC. Kr. until the century IV m. BC, which coincides with the fortification of Late Antiquity. The wall curtains are reinforced by walls that form zigzags and seven sawtooths, distributed without any particular order.

The function of the castle was to protect Butrint and its inhabitants in case of attacks. The strategic position where the fortress was built controlled the field of Vrina and Konispol. It is a construction of the ancient period, with suitable conditions for the development of economic activities such as: agriculture, fruit growing and animal husbandry.
