Church of Shën Sergi and Shën Baku

Reivews 0

The Church of Shën Sergi and Shën Baku is a historic church in the old town of Himara. It is built within the walls of Himara Castle.

The church is located in the upper part near the surrounding walls of the castle and has a view of the sea. It served as the headquarters of the Archbishopric of Himara in 1020.
Some traces on a walled stone slab date back to 786, so it is believed by archaeologists that the church was built mainly in two phases. However, traces on its walls show that numerous reconstructions have been done. This is mainly due to the numerous attacks on the castle and the deteriorating condition of many adjacent buildings. The church today is in relatively good condition and is visited by many tourists for the values it reflects in the rather beautiful post-Byzantine wall paintings.

It is thought that at that time the churches were built with the funds of the families of the area, and the Church of Shën Sergi and Shën Baku was also built in the same way. After a conflict between several families, advised by a prophet, they all came together to build and pray at this church.
