Monastery of Saint George, Finiq

The monastery of Saint George is located on the hill of Dema, on the narrowest strip of land that separates the Ionian Sea from Lake Butrint, at the head of the Ksamil peninsula. It is only 9 km from the city center of Saranda. The monastery of Saint George is a cultural monument, which is part of the fortified monasteries, with walls equipped with towers and turrets, built in the XVIII century on the ruins of the ancient wall.

In the center of the monastery is the church of Saint George, which is a reconstruction of the 19th century, surrounded by a number of ancillary facilities. The church has a long narthex leading to the nave, above which rises a dome, while to the east it is bounded by a wall iconostasis that separates it from the altar. Three levels of painting can be seen on the inner walls, decorated with wall paintings, which overlap each other.

From the top of the hill where the Saint George Monastery is located, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Ionian Sea and Lake Butrint. This remains an important pilgrimage destination as well as a very attractive one, for all those who prefer mountain climbing and nature walks.
