Saint Mary's Church was built at the foot of Deja mountain where the ruins of the medieval town and fortress of Danja are located. For the first time the church is mentioned as an episcopal center in the year 361. It is a typical Gothic style building, from the XIII century. It also features a one-nave church with a rectangular plan and a circular apse on the east side. The church was located in the Castle of Danja, in the valley of Mount Deja and is thought to have been built around the 1300s.
Skenderbeu is said to have placed a crown in this Church and near it there is the tomb of Lekë Zaharija.
The Church of the Nativity of Our Lady is one of the oldest churches in Albania that has resisted destruction over the centuries until the communist regime destroyed it completely in 1969.
