The Catholic Church of St. Dominic in Durrës is one of the most important and oldest churches in the coastal city of Durres, which is one of the historical centers of Albanian culture. This church is part of the Catholic Church and has a long and rich history.
For its history, the beginnings of this church extend to the early period of Christianity in the Balkans. On top of the foundations of a Roman temple, the first church named "Saint Dionysus" was built in the 5th century. The consequences of the fall of the Roman Empire and the Slavic invasion led to the disappearance of the first church, and a new church named "Saint Dominic" was built in this place in the 11th century.
Saint Dominic's Church has experienced many transformations and reconstructions over the centuries, undergoing architectural and stylistic changes. It has been transformed into an important monument of ecclesiastical architecture in Durrës. Its structure is mainly built in Roman-Gothic style, with mixed elements of early Roman and Gothic architecture of the middle period.
In the 20th century, the church was rebuilt and improved, preserving its historical and architectural characteristics. During the years of the communist regime in Albania, the church was closed and used like other buildings for a period of time.
As far as the affiliation of the church is concerned, it has been an important base for the Catholic faithful of Durres and the surrounding areas. Also, it has been declared a Cultural Monument by the local authorities and is an important destination for tourists and visitors who want to know the cultural and historical heritage of the city.
