Shen Prokop Church

The old Shen Prokop church is one of the most important historical monuments of Tirana, with an origin that is mixed with the period of the Ottoman occupation and a rich history that stretches for about 2 centuries.

The construction of this church happened about two centuries before the time of its construction, after the Ottoman conquest of the Albanian capital. It has been identified as the first Orthodox church in Tirana and has a special cultural and religious importance for the Orthodox community in this city.

Shen Prokop Church is dedicated to Saint Prokopi, a Christian martyr who, according to tradition, is considered the patron saint of Tirana. Every year, on July 8, believers celebrate and commemorate his life and works in this church.

The construction of Shen Prokop's Church began around 1795, making it one of the oldest religious buildings in the city. This church served as the center of religious and cultural life for the Orthodox community for a long period until 1938.

The cessation of the operation of the church marked a turning point in its history, but after the period of expropriation and demolition, the object was rebuilt and regained its religious function only in 1993.
