Reivews 0

The Church of Saint Mary Vllaherna in Berat is an important monument of medieval architecture in Albania and one of the most important historical objects in the city of Berat. Located in the Kala district, on the west side of the city, this church stands out for its age and architectural characteristics.

The name "Saint Mary Vllahernës" is a clear reference to the deep influence of the Byzantine Empire on the culture and architecture of Orthodox churches in the area of Albania. The absence of other churches with the name of "Saint Mary Vllaherna" in Albania suggests that the name may have been borrowed from the city of Constantinople, indicating early cultural and religious connections with the great Byzantine city.

The nave is supported by four internal supports, having four supports for its dome system. The structure of the church includes two important eastern pilasters, part of the altar, which have been preserved in their original state.

The east wall of the church contains a tripartite apse and numerous pediment-shaped windows on the north and south walls. The narrow windows illuminate the two side rooms of the church and are covered with the vault of the wing of the cross, creating a special environment and an illuminated atmosphere. The eastern walls end in a sawtooth shape, giving the church a finished and harmonious appearance.

Architecturally, the church contains excellent elements of medieval art and architecture. The niche of the wing of the cross is one of the most distinctive elements, enclosed within a brick arch and covered with stepped arches and zig-zag bricks.

Apart from its architectural features, the church of Saint Mary Vllaherna is also an important cultural and religious monument in Albania, offering a testimony of the country's early heritage.
