Saint George's Church in Korça is an important historical and cultural monument in the city of Korça. The construction of this church was realized with the financial help of the will of Anastas Avramidh Lakçes, a businessman who lived in Romania in the 19th century. The construction of the church started in 1899 and ended in 1905, with several interruptions of the works due to the interventions of the Turkish authorities.
The church has a distinctive architecture, with a round dome that illuminates the church hall. The dome had the shape and dimensions of the domes of old Byzantine churches, adapting to the architectural tradition of the area. The artwork for the church's murals and icons was done by iconographer Vangjel Zengo and his team.
During the years of communist rule, the church was destroyed in 1968-1969, along with several other religious monuments of the city. The destruction of this church and others was a massacre of the heritage of architecture and culture in Albania. However, after the fall of the communist regime, efforts to rebuild and restore the identity of these monuments began to become stronger.
In recent years, the initiative of the Dardhë emigrants in the USA to recreate the Church of Saint George in the village of Dardhë in Korça has been an inspiring example to bring back to life the lost monuments of Albanian culture and identity. In this context, the Korça community moved to the USA has started a campaign to collect the necessary aid for the reconstruction of their beloved church in Korça.
This initiative to recreate the church of Saint George in Korça is an expression of commitment and love to restore the cultural heritage of the city of Korça and to protect its historical identity.
