Church of Saint Barbara, Pllanë

The Church of Saint Barbara (Saint Barbulla) is located in the east of the village of Pllane in Lezhë, located in a high position on a hill in the middle of greenery. It is a 14th century monument with Benedictine style characteristics.

The building is a clear example of 14th century architecture, built in a simple way, with the use of rough limestone and tuff stones to cover its structure.

The main door of the church is located on the west side, while another door is located in the central part of the north side of the nave. The large and high circular apse on the east face, together with two small niches at the sides, define the exterior of the church. The light penetrates through seven windows, which have different shapes and one of them is circular. The nave, the inner hall of the church, has a wooden ceiling.

On the rearing side of the Naos and on the eastern face of the Narthex, the church preserves wall paintings. The painting in the Naos is placed on the right side of the western entrance and spans a considerable space, 1.8 meters wide and 1.95 meters high. It starts at a height of 0.45 meters from the floor. The painting technique is fresco, a method of painting walls with fresh colors, which are applied over a tomb covering. The scene shown is of Saint James and Saint Veneranda.

A special element is the presentation of the hand of the "Almighty Father", which symbolizes God's intervention in the course of events through the help of saints, such as St. George, who kills the dragon.

To reach the church, you can drive up to a short distance from it, and then walk for about 10 minutes to get closer to the facility. Saint Barbara's Church represents an important historical and architectural heritage for the Lezha region and is an important destination for visitors who want to see and understand the depth of the country's cultural heritage.
