Gurëzeza

Reivews 0

Gurëzeza, an ancient city in the village of Cakran, Fier district, represents an important archaeological treasure and a common evidence of the Illyrian civilization in today's Albanian territory. The ancient name of Gurëzeza is thought to be Barbyli, making it an archaeological site equivalent to other well-known cities such as Apolonia and Bylysia.

Archaeologists have carried out excavations and research in Gurëzeze, highlighting a rich history of civilization that starts from the Neolithic period and continues until the Middle Ages. The discoveries have shown that the city has undergone a continuous development and has served as an important economic, political, and social center. The surrounding wall of Gurëzeza has a length of 2100 meters, making it a large settlement with an area of about 23 hectares.

Gurezeza is rich in archaeological finds, including objects and findings from the Middle Neolithic period to the 4th century BC. Concrete data on the real name of the ancient city is lacking, and much work remains to discover more about this important period of Albanian history.

Gurëzeza has been declared a monument of cultural heritage and, although excavations have been carried out by archaeological expeditions that began as early as 1916, there are still many hidden and unknown waiting to discover its cultural wealth. In 2008, a call was made for the promotion and development of the values of Gurëzeza, highlighted as a priority for the community and the country's cultural heritage.
