Paleochristian Basilica of Elbasan

The Paleochristian Basilica of Elbasan, a monument of cultural heritage in the district of Elbasan. This monument, categorized as an architectural object of the "Architecture" type, is an important example of the Paleo-Christian period and has gained a special place in the city's culture.

Located near the center of the city of Elbasan and hidden with the beauty of a flower garden, the basilica stands as a testimony of the wealth of the early Christian period. In 2007, it was discovered for the first time, causing a wave of interest from researchers and visitors to the city. Also named as "Paleo-Christian Basilica in Elbasan", this monument has revealed layers of a mosaic on the surface of the building, bringing to light fragments of a mural mosaic.

The ruins of the basilica are included within the archaeological zone or archaeological risk, giving it the status of a cultural monument of the first category. However, in 2020, the information board of the monument was damaged, but investments from the Durrës Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage, in 2018, restored it.

Unfortunately, the basilica has been left in a deplorable state by the local and central authorities, making the process of returning it to a desired tourist destination difficult.

However, archaeological excavations and maintenance efforts have begun since 2010 and continue annually. The Paleochristian Basilica of Elbasan is included in the tourist guides of the municipality and serves as a very favorable destination for visitors. To realize its potential as a tourist destination, it is necessary for local authorities to further engage in the maintenance and promotion of this cultural heritage treasure.
