The Gjuricaj Basilica is a rich treasure of cultural heritage located in the city of Durres, bringing with it an important overview of the early period of Christianity in this region. Dating back to the 5th-6th century, the basilica is an important testament to the activity of culture and faith in this part of the Balkans.
Discovered in 1980, the basilica has made it possible to recognize an important period in the history of the city of Durrës and Christianity in Albania. Although descriptive signboards along the road axis are still missing, the importance of the basilica is recognized and appreciated by the archaeological and cultural community.
The Gjuricaj Basilica has a special architectural structure. Its description includes a basilica plan with a central aisle and two side aisles. This feature is typical for basilicas of the late-antique and early medieval period. More than a thousand years after its construction, the basilica still shows clear traces of the architectural and decorative elements of the time.
Regarding the historical context, the period in which the construction of the Gjuricaj Basilica is located is important for the understanding of the development of Christianity in Durrës.
