English Soldiers' Cemetery

The English soldiers' cemetery is located in the Great Lake Park, in a corner of the Memorial Ensemble, Tirana. This cemetery commemorates the British soldiers who fell during the Second World War in Albania. During this war 52 British and Commonwealth servicemen were killed in Albania. For a long time, their sacrifice was not mentioned in the historical records of Albania since Britain was considered by the former communist regime as an enemy imperialist country. The memorial cemetery was built in 1994, near the place where the communist authorities had buried the bodies of fallen British soldiers in an unmarked common grave, under one of the streets near the University of Tirana building. A red granite block with an inscription in Albanian and English is placed in the center of the memorial.
