Reivews 0

Himara Castle is about 3,500 years old.The castle has two entrance gates, one in the north and one in the south, which were closed at the end of the day. The castle of Himares is bordered by two canyons. The canyon of "Vishës" in the northwest and in the southeast from the canyon of "Kole Midhar".

It is otherwise known as Barbaka and is built on a rocky hill. The castle of Himara has existed, at least since the middle of the 4th century BC and controlled the road across the coast from Orik to Buthroto. Himara is mentioned in several ancient writings. In the 1st century before Christ, the Greek geographer Strabo left a detailed description of the coast of the Adriatic and the Ionian.

In the 8th century AD Himara Castle became the center of the Himara Bishopric, which proves that it was an important center on the Ionian Coast. For this reason, the entire province that included the coast, Kurvelesh, the Vlora river and Tepelena was baptized with the name Himare. The architectural ensemble of Himare Castle has been declared a cultural monument.

Surrounding walls from the Hellenistic period have been preserved in some parts of it. The large blocks of polygonal stones are similar to the surrounding walls of Finic, Butrint and other cities of Kaonia of the same period.

There are several churches within the walls of the castle.
• Episkopisë Church
• Mihaili Church
• Shën Mëri Church
• Church of Gjithëshenjtorëve.
