Çorraj Village

The village of Çorraj is located at the foot of the mountain of Vakaj, in the province of Kurveles, in Himare. The lands of the village rise to a height of 200 m above sea level. In the northern part it borders Kuçin, in the eastern part lies the village of Fterrë, while in the south is the stone of Pollaca. The peaks that surround the village are: the peak of Gjinika, 1404 m and the peak of Dhria, 1112 m high.In the found materials, it is mentioned for the first time in the year 1431, under the name of Çernogoricё, and it consisted of 74 families. While from the studies of the teams of the Archaeological Institute, some lithic tools dating back to the Paleolithic and Mesolithic period have been found in today's village grounds. Also in the places called Bajakë and Vaka there are some ruins of medieval houses, while in the center of the village there is the church of Saint Mary, made with frescoes in 1871.The residence of Gjik Gjipal is a Cultural Monument and is located in the village of Çorraj. It dates back to the 19th century. Another archaeological find of importance is the prehistoric fortification of Katafiq, which is located above the village, about 700 m above sea level, in the Shëndrera Pass.

The village has preserved its traditional architecture quite well. The houses are two-story with red tile roofs, stone walls and surrounded by a green landscape of olive and cypress trees. The inhabitants of this village have in their tradition the polyphonic song of Labëria.
The cooking menu in the families of this village is traditional, with kulac and roasted meat, which according to tradition is grilled on a spit. Among the main occupations of the inhabitants of this village are agriculture and animal husbandry. The wooded areas and meadows in the surrounding mountains favor cattle breeding quite well and historically the raising and breeding of small cattle remains quite developed.
