The Academy of Sciences of Albania was founded in 1972 with the efforts of Professor Aleks Buda, who was appointed its first president. The Academy is the most important scientific institution in the Republic of Albania. It includes the most prominent scientists, academics who carry out scientific activities in institutes and research centers as well as other scientific organizations inside and outside the country. The establishment of the Academy was preceded by four stages: the stage of the Academy of Voskopojë, of the Renaissance, between the two wars and the stage after the liberation, until the full formation of the real Academy. Currently, the Academy has 30 members, academics and 13 research institutions.
The main functions of the Academy are:

• Conducting theoretical and practical studies and research in various fields of Albanian social sciences, natural and technical and enabling the implementation of these studies in practice.

• Provides the Government with the necessary advice and expertise in solving important issues in the country's development.

• Cooperation with universities and other research institutions.

• Supports and encourages the active participation of associations, scientific foundations and collaborators in scientific activity.

• Organization of national and international activities related to science.
