Varosh Castle, Ndroq

Varoshi Castle is located in the valley of Erzen in Ndroq, Tirana. The traces of the Castle show that this settlement is about 387 m high, with surrounding walls built during the barbarian invasions of the 4th-6th centuries.

As a construction technique from ceramic fragments found on the surface, the castle belongs to the late antique period. Its walls are wide and built of medium-sized stones, bound together with mortar and lime mixed with fine brick dust.

During the XIII-XIV centuries, it is thought that the castle was rebuilt anew, after a destruction which is belived to have happened at that time. It continued to serve as the seat of Albanian feudal lords against local rivals and foreign invaders. After the death of Skanderbeg, the Ottoman invaders gave importance to the Ndroqi fortress, as through it they watched over Durrës, which was under the rule of Venice.
