Subash Bridge over the Drino River, Gjirokastër

Reivews 0

Subashi Bridge is located about 200 m away from Gjirokastra Street. The bridge is a monument of cultural heritage in Subash, of the type "Architecture", approved in May 1991. Its typology is a bridge, built in 1830.

It is mentioned as early as 1830 by Hujks, who says that: at 11 miles from Gjirokastra and Tepelena, the Drino plain narrows into a gorge, where near a good inn there is a magnificent high bridge with a single arch over the Drino river. .

The bridge was built over the Drino river and it is quite damaged today. Only the parts built on the ground at the entrance and exit of the bridge are preserved, while the central part above the water is demolished. Today, the bridge is crossed over a bel-type metal construction.

The bridge is formed with 5 arches on both sides, circular and sail-shaped, open one above the other. It is thought that perhaps an earlier ancient bridge existed here because traces of massive ashlar stones are preserved on one of its sides. The Subashi Bridge remains one of the attractions that you can see, for its great historical and architectural values, during a visit to this area.
