Kavaja's Rock is a natural monument, named after the city of Kavaja. The large rock is about 6 km from Kavaja and about 8 km from Durrës. It is located right next to the sea coast, with a height that goes up to 105 m above sea level. The name of the Rock of Kavaja appears in many legends dating back to ancient times, but it is also part of historical facts. Since over 2000 years ago, the strategic importance of this rocky massif was known. It has served as a natural fortress, as the place where the greatest empires of the time fought their battles, as the place where Pompey and Caesar met in 48 BC. While in 1081, the rock was also the battlefield of the clash of the Byzantine and Norman armies.
The rock represents a conglomerate, sandstone, of Miocene age and weathered. It is 560 m long and 160 m wide. In its upper part and in many of the vertical side parts, the rock massif is covered with bushes and trees.
It continued to be an object of great military importance, becoming a "museum" of unlimited military expenditures. As a military zone, a network of deep tunnels was built inside it, where a battery of coastal guns, with a range of up to 27 km, and several divisions of armored vehicles were positioned. It had turned into a fortress together with Sazan Island, as two impregnable points of our coast. After 1990, the barbed wire surrounding the Kavaja's Rock and the entire surrounding area was taken down.
The Rock of Kavaja remains an area with a rich history of wars fought in this country, wars that were decisive in the history of the world at that time. Today it is also known as a tourist area, with its special shape, evergreens, the figures that have been created by the millions of years of erosion of atmospheric agents and the position where it is located give the Rock of Kavaja a fantastic appearance, creating a very attractive landscape.
