Nivica Canyons

Nivicë canyons are located near the village of Nivicë, in the south of Albania. The canyons were formed by the erosion of the Nivica stream, part of the Benca river, in carbonate rocks. It is several km long, 15 m wide and up to 700 m deep.

The stream of Nivica has formed a gorge with a very narrow bed, about 3 km long, it continues with the basin in Merje and joins the Gurrë e Progonati. Its bottom is very regular, with breaks or thresholds, rapids, pits, deep grooves in the rocky bottom of the canyon, with an oval appearance in the form of cauldrons, and with clear and drained water.

Nivica is an early Illyrian settlement, with a still unexplored fortress and a residential area where it is thought to have been an important urban center. Gura waterfall and two others below it, are formed by water that breaks off and falls from great heights, about 30-40 m.

Although the canyon appears deeper and deeper, its view with full of natural contrasts fascinates. The magic continues with the cliffs, with the stepped bed and the numerous caves on the rock face, which remains one of the most beautiful destinations that nature generously gives us.
