Nikolica Village

The village of Nikolica is located at the head of the Devolli valley, north of the Gramozi mountain. Nikolica is the key village that connects the province of Devolli with that of Kolonje, through the mountain of Gramozi, about 1230 m above sea level.

According to the legends about the name of the village, it is said that: it was formed by combining the two names of the first inhabitants in a composite, of the couple Niko and Lica. Also referring to the Turkish register of Korça 1431, the village of Nikolica had only seven houses. The Codex of Korça and Selasfori states that: until the first half of the 18th century, Nikolica was a city with 6,000 inhabitants, with a metropolis and beautiful churches.

Nikolica is located 33 km south-west of Bilishti and 12 km south of the tourist village of Dardha. The area is surrounded by high mountains above 1800 m, in a terrain covered with high and dense forests such as: beech and pine. Nikolica is a border village, where only a few families live. It has a mountainous continental climate, with severe and frosty winters, where thick layers of snow form. While the summer is short and cool.
