Spille Cave, Himara

The cave of Spile is located in the bay with the same name, in the city of Himara. Among a series of caves it is the largest located at the base of a low cliff 100 meters from today's coastline of Spile.

The cave lies at a depth of more than 30 m with an irregular entrance about 8 m wide and 7 m high, 3.6 m above sea level. It was formed as a result of karst processes. The limestone bed that forms the cave walls is already tectonically deformed. They have a big crack in the ceiling and inside it there are stalactites.

Stratified evidence of prehistoric activity dating from the mid-Holocene has been discovered above this cave. The areas around the caves were also inhabited during this period, also evidenced by various evidence such as ceramics or graves found nearby.

According to archaeologists, Spile Cave has been inhabited since the Iron Age, during the Hellenistic and Roman historical periods and even until the Middle Ages. The finds of all these periods are unique and the ones that stand out the most are microliths and numerous flint tools, chips, blades, digging tools, etc.

Spile Cave in Himarë is a Cultural Monument, it is one of the most frequented points of cultural tourism. Every year different foreign and local visitors are amazed by its beauty.
