Pogradeci is located about 40 km away from Korça, 5 km away from Tushemishti and 25 km away from Ohrid. The city has an area of about 27,323,00 ha and lies in a valley surrounded by mountains to the west, low hills to the south and east. It is a cross-border mountainous area. It also has the deepest tectonic lake in the Balkans with a depth of 290 m and one of the most important in Europe.Pogradec has an ancient history and numerous cultural, geological and natural documents. The tribe of Enkelej lived within the walls of the castle, built on top of the hill near the city, in its north-western part.
Archeological discoveries, which confirm the population in this region, date from the Neolithic period (6000 years BC), with population and construction increasing during the copper, bronze and iron periods. There are 24 natural monuments and 36 cultural monuments, which are officially documented. Among them, the most interesting are:

  • The ruins of an Illyrian settlement and a Christian church with colorful mosaics were found in the picturesque village of Lin.
  • The village of upper Selce, populated since the 6th century BC, sought to join the battles of Alexander the Great. Five ancient monumental tombs with carved entrances show the fame of the mighty ancient city of Pelion, where the Illyrian king Clitus lived.
  • The Roman road Via Egnatia passes through the region, from Ohrid, along the villages of Mokra and ends at the Adriatic Sea in Durrës. The Golik Bridge of the c. XVII, built on the Shkumbin River which is a trace of this old Roman road.
  • Numerous water sources include the springs of Drilon, where clear and crystal clear water flows into the Drilon River. Together with the lakes of Prespa, they form the most important core of a Biosphere Reserve.

It is ranked in the IBA (Important Bird Area), most important for wintering waterfowl, with over 46,000. It is the area with the largest massifs of chestnut in the country.
Pogradec beach is located inside the city along the "1 Maji" promenade. It is a sandy beach, clear water and many opportunities for entertainment. Outside the city are the crystal water beaches of Lin and Tushemishti and only 4 km east of Pogradec, there is the tourist spot of Drilon. Pogradec is the tourist town by the wonderful lake Ohrid. It is beautiful not only from nature, but also an ancient city with early cultural and artistic traditions. It is the city of flowers, of wine, of the rare Koran fish, which is hardly found anywhere else, but also of hospitality. A "truly Albanian" city, as the great Lasgushi says.
