Prespa National Park is located in the Korça District and has an area of 27,500 ha. The park is surrounded by high mountains. The Great Prespa and Little Prespa lakes lie in the part of the land where three countries join: Albania, Macedonia and Greece.The park is one of the largest and most impressive natural parks in Albania. Prespa Lakes are the only ones in the Balkans that have islands. This area is quite rich in cultural values. Here we can mention: the Eremite Churches of Byzantium, the Treni cave in the lake of Little Prespa and the Trojan fortress.
But the real protagonist is undoubtedly the island of Maligrad, which, with its steep limestone rock, draws all the attention towards it. For all those who want to visit the island more closely through small boats, Maligrad will also reveal a pleasant surprise, the church of Saint Mary. Built in 1369, the church with its frescoes will leave you with a rare spiritual impression.
The flora and fauna of the entire park is extremely rich. With over 1500 species of plants, 261 species of birds, 21 species of fish and many other species populate the area, where it is worth mentioning the Dalmatian pelican, which is mainly concentrated in Prespa e Vogël. To the west of this same lake, in the area of Devolli, you should definitely visit the Train Caves, where you will be able to see up close the prehistoric wall paintings dating back to 6000 years BC.
The park is an important area for birds, in particular for the globally threatened species such as: karabullak, lutra, etc. The slopes of Dry Mountain are covered by beech forests and subalpine and alpine pastures, where some rare plants are found. Within the area there are many areas with archaeological and biospeleological values, especially for bats.
Great Prespa lies in Albania, Greece and Macedonia. With an area of about 300 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 54 m, this lake is known for its fresh waters and beaches with sand and fine stones. For all those who want a tourist destination away from the noise and the mass crowd, Prespa remains the ideal solution. Several quality hotels and bars and restaurants offer all the necessary services for tourists, while the beach during the summer is accompanied by a very lively atmosphere.
