Korab-Koritnik Nature Park, Dibër

The Korab-Koritnik Nature Park is located in the District of Dibra and Kukes, between the rivers Drini i Zi and Drini i Bardhë, with an area of 55,550 ha. The natural park is named after the mountains of Korabi and Koritnik.

Korabi is the highest peak of both Albania and North Macedonia and stands at an altitude of 2,764 m. Korabi and Koritniku are recognized as an internationally important plant area by Plantlife. The Korab-Koritnik Nature Park is connected from the north through an area with the Sharri National Park in Kosovo, it is also part of the cross-border area with the Mavrova National Park in Macedonia to the Desha Mountains in the south.

As the natural heritage of our country, it is characterized by a rich biodiversity, with a variety of habitats and floristic and faunal species. It has a medium-continental climate, with wet and cold winters and hot and dry summers. The ecosystem is considered an area of particular importance in Europe for mountain birds.

It consists of coniferous forests, slopes and mountain meadows that are mainly covered with deciduous trees and a great variety of wild flowers. Vegetation levels are distinguished based on different altitudes, oak forests from 400-900 m, coniferous forests, beech forests and mixed deciduous forests from 1,000-2,000 m above sea level. The most common types of trees in the park are: silver fir, Austrian pine, Bosnian pine, Macedonian pine and black alder. Oak forests can be found at lower elevations including: oriental hemlock, ornamental oak, Macedonian oak, and field maple.

The fauna is represented by 37 species of large mammals such as: brown bear, gray wolf, Balkan lynx, roe deer, wild boar, weasel, pine cone and red squirrel. It also contains a variety of suitable habitats that support dense populations of birds such as: golden eagle, western goshawk, peregrine falcon, common buzzard, curlew, eagle, griffon vulture, hazel grouse and many others.

This area, which includes the castle of Doda, Tomi, Tërthora, Topoja, Shishtaveci, Zapodi, Shtiqeni, Bushtricë and Maqellare, has recently developed from a tourist point of view, becoming one of the most favorite destinations for local and foreign tourists.

 Especially with the outstanding natural resources, forests, landscapes, mountain peaks where the highest peak of our country is located, Korab, alpine pastures, mountains, valleys, deep gorges, lakes and rivers which have a lot to offer in the field of tourism.
