The National Museum of Education is located in the building of the first Albanian school, opened on March 7, 1887 in Korça, by the patriotic teacher Pandeli Sotiri. This object, which was originally the private home of the Korça patriot Diamant Terpo, has enjoyed the status of National Museum of Education since 1967, while since 1973 it has been declared a Cultural Monument.
The First Albanian Teacher was a secular national school, which is considered the first school to be equipped with the texts of various subjects in the Albanian language. Methodists and distinguished didacticians of Albanian national education taught there, important personalities of educational, social and political life. The patriotic colony of Bucharest, on the one hand, and the revivalists in Istanbul were the main pillars on which the establishment of the Korca School was supported. The revivalist Naim Frashëri, at that time an employee of the Ministry of Education in Istanbul, strongly helped to formalize it.
The Secret National Committee, consisting of: Jovan C. Kosturi, Orhan Çerçiz Pojani, Thimi Vasil Marko on one side and the "Society of Learning Shqip" with Ali bey Dishnica on the other, prepared the ground for the opening of the school, gathering over 100 signatures of the heads of families in Korça, who pledged to send their children to this school. The entire burden of financial expenses was borne by the Romanian Albanians, headed by Anastas Avram-Lakçe, Nikolla Naum Naço, as well as activists Pandeli Evangjeli, Visar Dodani, etc.
The teacher belonged to the elementary school system and had five classes. In the benches of a class, boys and girls sat together, Muslims and Christians sat, which had not happened before not only in the schools of Korça, but also beyond. For the first time, children from rich and poor classes were classmates, since until that time education was not a privilege of the poor classes. The principals of the School were: Pandeli Sotiri, Thanas Sina, Petro Nini Luarasi, Nuçi Naçi, Kristaq Vaja. Her teachers were: Koço Sotiri, Hafiz Ali Korça, Nikolla Lako, Sabri Qyteza, Nikollaq Zografi, Thanas Nona, Spiro Kosturi, Thoma Avrami, etc. While the textbooks were prepared by: Naim and Sami Frashëri, Jani Vreto, Nuci Naçi, etc.
The building of the National Museum is a two-story building, with an age of about a century and a half and architectural type. The first floor consists of a corridor and two large rooms, while the second floor has four rooms. Its windows are about 80 cm wide and high, with a wooden roof covered with country tiles and a front facade decorated with a corner.
The museum building has eight exhibition areas. In this museum is reflected the history of Albanian writing, the multitude of alphabets up to the alphabet we have today, decided in the Congress of Manastir, in 1908. Also the history of the Albanian book from the first primer of the Albanian language (Evetari 1744), compiled by Naum Panajot Bredhi (Vekilharxhi), up to the later primers. A part of the museum's space is dedicated to the massification and modernization of Albanian education and schools in the period after the Second World War.
