The National Archaeological Museum is located in Nënë Tereza Square, in Tirana. Nearly 2,000 objects are exhibit in the museum. The museum relies on a reserve fund with more than 17,000 objects, to which objects are continually added from organized archaeological finds.

It was opened in November 1948 as an Archaeological-Ethnographic Museum and functioned as such until 1976. As a result of the removal of the ethnographic pavilion, the museum now has an archaeological profile. In order to further improve the content and exhibition, this museum went through a series of reorganizations and restorations in the years 1957, 1976, 1982, 1985, and 1998 as a result of significant archaeological research in the fields of prehistory, antiquity, and the Middle Ages.

The Archaeological Museum presents archaeological research and discoveries throughout the territory of Albania. The exhibited material includes a period of time from the stone ages, to those of metals (bronze and iron), when the Illyrian ethnos was founded and developed, the period of Illyrian antiquity and the period of late antiquity and the Middle Ages until the Ottoman occupation.
