The Archeological Museum of Durrës is located near the Volga, on Taulantia Street. Vangjel Toçi, considered as the father of archeology in Durrës, opened the museum in March 1951. The first objects were placed in a two-story villa, exhibiting those artifacts that had been discovered up to that time, from the subterranean of the Durrës area.

But over the years, the Archeological Museum building has changed its location several times. The new Archaeological Museum, which construction had begun in the 1980s, got the exhibit objects and archaeological funds in 1999.

The major part of the museum consists of 3204 objects, located on the ancient site of Dyrrah. Huge sculptures, such as the statue of the Roman emperor and the statue of Gea, the goddess of the earth and fertility found in 2005 in the city of Durrs, can be seen as you enter the museum in its front area. Beginning with the prehistoric period, the Hellenistic period, and the Roman period, collections from 3 main periods are on exhibit.

The Prehistoric Period includes the Dyrrah of 3000 years ago. Artifacts from this time frame seem to be abundant and range from stone hammerheads to bronze spades. These historical facts prove that these territories were inhabited by autochthonous people. Reassuring us of Durrës' place as one of the oldest towns on the Mediterranean.

The Hellenistic Period is rich in ceramic objects, designed with various figures. Those objects are indicators of a cultural and economic development of the city throughout this period. Discovered near the ancient tombs that exist in the hills of the city of Durrës, these objects remain a precious treasure. There are also ten parts of numerous figurines portraying the goddess Artemis, who is considered as the safeguard of the city from two aspects: she ensured its military defense as a beloved of nature, and at the same time she facilitated the continuation of the city's population and provides protection to women.

The last period on exhibit in this museum is the Roman Period. The coins produced in ancient Dyrrah, that testify to the development of this town during the Roman period, serve as a visual representation of this time frame. There is also the treasure of Durrës, a discovery made in 1941, near the city bazaar. The treasure dates back to 170 AD and the coins discovered belong to the Roman Empire.

Due to its coastal location, the museum has benefited by both underwater and underground discoveries. These underwater discoveries include ship anchors and amphorae that witness to the trade that occurred during that time. This museum's numerous monumental pieces serve as a living tribute to our past, making it one of the most popular in the country.

A gem that you can never weary of finding in terms of history, tourism, and culture, Durrs is the city that straddles antiquity and modernity.
