Archaeological Museum of Butrint, Sarandë

Reivews 0

The Archaeological Museum of Butrint is located inside the Acropolis castle which belonged to the ancient city of Butrint. He was opened for the public in 1950. At that time the museum contained the rich archaeological materials of the Greco-Roman period, that were discovered by the Italian Archaeological Mission that excavated in Butrint between the two world wars 1928-1940.

The beginning of systematic excavations in Butrint by Albanian archaeologists during the years 1960-1980, significantly increased the number of the archaeological objects and monuments that were exhibited in this museum. The museum has undergone a number of reconstructions, with the most recent taking place in 1988 and giving the rich, centuries-old history of the ancient city a more comprehensive form. The museum functioned until 1991 and was closed to remain as such until 2005.

In summer 2005, the museum was renovated and enriched with archaeological finds from the excavations of the joint project of the Institute of Archaeology and the Butrint Foundation starting from 1994. Its reopening was made possible thanks to the cooperation and financial contribution of the Institute of Archaeology, Butrint Foundation, AG Leventis Foundation, Pakard Humanitarian Institute and Butrint National Park.

In the museum are located the Statues of Apollo and Artemis. Also, there are exhibited 1325 objects such as: flint, bones, ceramics, glass, statues, coins, etc., discovered from the archaeological excavations inside Butrint. Archaeological excavations have also been discovered from: Diaporiti, Kalivo, Xarra, Fushë Vrina, and a small part from Finiqi.

The presentation of other smaller residential centers in the area around Butrint, clarifies better the conditions of the birth and flourishing of the city of Butrint during the Hellenistic period and the Roman period.
