Vivar Castle

The Vivar Castle is located in Butrint, near the Vivar Canal. To prevent the French soldiers of Corfu from landing, Ali Pasha Tepelena urgently constructed the fortress between 1807 and 1808. The castle is 20 x 30 meters in size and has four towers at each corner.

The two towers that face the sea are circular in design, whilst the two on the other side are quadrangular. The main gate of the castle is also located between the latter. A second, smaller gate is accessible in the center of the north wall, facing the canal bank.The protection of this gate was realized in addition to the two towers from the outside, also by an internal fortification system. This fort is surrounded by water, so the only way to get there is by boat. The castle is ten minutes' distance from Butrint. During the boat ride, you can see the natural beauty of the Vivar channel, the variety of birds and aquatic creatures that live in this protected area. At Butrint, the Vivar Castle continues to be a top attraction for tourists interested in history, culture, and the outdoors.There are a number of sandy beaches close to the castle that are frequented throughout the year with both visitors and locals.
