Preza Castle

A few kilometers from "Mother Teresa" airport, Preza Castle is located in the northeast of Tirana. It is a classic Mediterranean castle that was probably constructed between the thirteenth and fourteenth century. The castle is fortified in the corners with four circular-plan towers and has a quadrangular layout with 80 x 50 m sides.

The castle has four different construction phases such as: the fortification of the castle, the reconstruction of the surrounding walls, the constructions that have been made inside the surrounding walls and the construction of a clock tower. All of the towers' tiny windows served as a big help for the castle's defense. They were over the castle's entrance and all of its walls. The castle had only one entrance and the gate of the castle is closed from the top, with an extended cylindrical vault. Starting with castle's small size, it is believed that it wasn't used as a residence, but only for military purposes. Due to its small size and the poor durability of its surrounding walls, this castle is classified as a structure that has been used to observe significant military and economic roads that flowed beneath it through Tirana's plains.

According to Marin Barleti, the castle had turned into a ruin in 1466.To reach that state of destruction, it must have been abandoned at the beginning of Skanderbeg's wars.As a possible time of the construction of Preza, it could have been the beginning of the XV century by the principality of Topias, which was the owner of this area. The Preza Castle, a part of Albanian cultural heritage, offers an amazing view and is open to visitors all year long.
