Karosi Castle is located above the old village of Qeparo, about 450 m above sea level and at a distance of 3.5 km from it.
The castle belongs to a more advanced phase of the prehistoric settlements of Kaonisë.
From the excavations carried out in 1970-1990, two construction phases were observed, one in the Late Bronze Age and the other in the Iron Age. While it clarifies the fact that it has been used since the c. IV BC.
This 3,000 year-old fortress with five rows of walls is the largest in south-western Albania and is still not well explored by archaeologists.
The first village was located near the fort in an area called Pirg, which was later called Kastel in Latin, while during the c. VI.-IX, received the Slavic name Gradishta.
